POSITION PURPOSE: Act as Maintenance/Mechanic personnel for the School Corporation transportation department. Assist in the repair and maintenance of all school vehicles to minimize down time and maximize the value of the district's investment which allows each student and staff safe and efficient transportation for curricular and extra-curricular activities offered by the district's schools.


ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Repairs and maintains all school buses, school bus equipment, and support vehicles.
  • Assists in implementing and maintaining a preventative maintenance program for district owned vehicles.
  • Test drives and diagnoses’ problems on district equipment.
  • Assists in ordering and procuring parts for repair of district vehicles.
  • Uses wrenches, gauges, drills, grinders, or other specialized mechanical tools and equipment.
  • Maintains records of school vehicle maintenance.
  • Ensure that all protocols, training, and requirements are in place for all corporation staff who utilize corporation vehicles.
  • Assists in the transportation of students by driving routes when necessary.
  • Completes required state and school corporation reports in a timely manner.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.


REQUIREMENTS:

  • Education and/or Experience: High school diploma or GED or equivalent.
  • Possess a combination of education and technical experience including a minimum of one-year diesel service and repair (ASE certifications preferred)
  • 1 to 2 years of experience repairing school bus or related vehicles
  • Valid CDL with applicable endorsement or ability to obtain one
  • Previous experience working in transportation related positions required.

  • Ability to communicate fluently verbally and in writing in English.
  • Ability to effectively present information and respond effectively to questions in one-on-one, small group situations to students and other school staff.
  • Ability to respond to common inquiries or complaints from students, parents, staff or members of the community.
  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions and procedure manuals.
  • Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.
  • General knowledge of computer usage and ability to use standard school software, internet software, e-mail, spreadsheets and word processing software.
  • Certificates as determined by GCS including a valid Indiana Class B Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) w/ passenger endorsement, state school bus driver’s certificates/licenses, and the ability to obtain a valid First Aid/CPR card.
  • Knowledge of repairing heavy duty gasoline and diesel vehicles

HOURS:  Year-round position; 260 days per year; 40 hours per week with occasional weekends, if needed; Daily hours 8:00am - 5:00pm

 

SALARY: Starting pay $22.50 per hour, rate is dependent upon education and/or experience. (Schedule #37-1)
