Teacher for Students with Blind Low Vision Impairment
The Elkhart County Special Education Cooperative (ECSEC) is made up of the Baugo, Concord, Fairfield, Goshen, Middlebury, and Wa-Nee Community Schools in North Central Indiana located 30 minutes from the University of Notre Dame. Administrative offices are located at 704 West Lincoln Avenue, Goshen, IN 46526.
POSITION PURPOSE: Teaches preschool, elementary and secondary school subjects and daily living skills to blind low vision students, consults with general education teachers to develop strategies and modifications for students with visual impairments by performing the following duties:
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential function satisfactorily.
- Instructs students in the use of magnification equipment, large print materials and/or braille systems to access general education curriculum.
- Confers with parents, administrator, testing specialist, social worker, and others to develop individual education programs for students.
- Plans curriculum and prepares lessons and other instructional materials according to grade level students.
- Transcribes lessons and other materials into Braille for blind students or large print for low vision students.
- Reviews and corrects completed assignments using such aides as Braille writer or computer.
- Arranges for and conducts field trips designed to promote experiential learning.
- Instructs students in academic subjects and daily living subjects such as hygiene, safety, and food preparation.
- Supervises and directs activities of paraprofessional involved with the blind low vision programs.
- Urges students to participate in verbal and sensory classroom learning experience to ensure their confidence in the subject matter. Development of social skills and the ability to identify objects encountered in daily living.
- Consult with regular and special education regarding adaptation and modification of classroom curriculum and materials for blind low vision students.
- Responsible for obtaining large print textbooks, recorded textbooks, braille materials, assistive devices and other adapted materials for students.
- Conduct in-service presentations for students and teachers to develop awareness of vision impairment.
- Teaches collaboratively with regular education teachers in all subject areas.
- Responsible for monitoring in-take/out-take and inventory of adapted materials that have been ordered/received.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
REQUIREMENTS: Appropriate certification as required by the Indiana Department of Education.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Ability to prepare written reports and correspondence.
- Ability to communicate effectively with groups of students, parents, and school staff.
- Skills in human relations.
- Ability to plan and organize, good work habits.
- Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of variables in situations requiring decision making.
- Orientation and Mobility certification recommended.
- Other qualifications the Governing Council and/or Director may require.
WORK CALENDAR: School year; 184 days per year; 40 hours per week
SALARY: Teaching Contract – 184 days
