Occupational Therapist

 

The Elkhart County Special Education Cooperative (ECSEC) is made up of the Baugo, Concord, Fairfield, Goshen, Middlebury, and Wa-Nee Community Schools in North Central Indiana located 30 minutes from the University of Notre Dame. Administrative offices are located at 1216 S. Indiana Avenue, Goshen, IN 46526.

 

POSITION PURPOSE:  Plans, organizes, and conducts occupational therapy program in school settings to facilitate development and rehabilitation of students with developmental, emotional, mental, and physical disabilities.

                                       

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:  To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to satisfactorily perform each essential function:

  • Conduct occupational therapy evaluations.
  • Plan student-centered occupational therapy programs with emphasis on:
    • Practice in functional, pre-vocational, vocational, and daily living skills
    • Activities involving fine motor and strengthening exercises
    • Participation in sensory motor, educational, recreational, and social activities 
    • Consideration of individual’s physical capacity, cognitive level, and personal interest to upgrade individual to maximum independence.
  • Recommend and monitor positioning of students with sensory motor impairments to maximize function and maintain optimum skeletal alignment.
  • Consult and coordinate with other members of the educational team to select activity program consistent with needs and capabilities of individual and align with other therapeutic programs/activities.
  • Teach individual skills and techniques required for participation in activities and evaluate individual progress.
  • Supervise occupational therapy assistants and motor-aid paraprofessional who assist therapists with program activities.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

 

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Appropriate certification as required by the Indiana Department of Education.
  • Ability to prepare accurate written reports and correspondence.
  • Knowledge of disability conditions for students with special needs.
  • Ability to assess the functional performance of students within their educational environment.
  • Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of variables in situations requiring decision making.
  • Ability to drive to schools and educational settings within the assigned service area.
  • Knowledge of major theories, treatment procedures, and research relating to special needs children.
  • Knowledge of current federal, state, and local laws and regulations.
  • Selection and administration of appropriate assessment tools.
  • Ability to participate in group decision-making during the Individualized Educational Program process.
  • Ability to develop, implement, evaluate, and modify activities for therapeutic intervention within the educational setting.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with students, parents, and school staff.
  • Ability to train individuals and small groups on therapy techniques and activities.

 

HOURS:  School year - 184 days per year; 40 hours per week; Daily hours (7:30 am to 3:30 pm)

 

SALARY:  Rate is dependent upon education and experience. (Schedule #25-4 or 25-1-A)
