Communications and Public Relations Specialist

 

POSITION PURPOSE:  To focus on a comprehensive communication program that informs and engages the school board, school division staff, parents, media, and the public about Goshen Community Schools. Communicates through clear, cohesive messaging the initiatives, decisions, programs, and events that ensures the integrity and consistency of school division branding. Actively engage past and current GCS students, their families, community members and local businesses.  Attract new students and their families.

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Update and maintain school district website.
  • Monitors, administers, and updates all GCS Social Media Accounts
  • Utilizes ParentSquare for student/parent communications to fullest potential.
  • Collaborates with Superintendent and the Board of School Trustees in communicating the initiatives, decisions, programs, and events of Goshen Community Schools
  • Annually updates a corporation-wide comprehensive communication plan that aligns with the school’s strategic plan and fosters dialogue, collaboration, understanding, engagement, and trust.
  • Coordinates and oversees the development of communication materials, including print, video, web, and social media.
  • Creates and strengthens relationships with the media, leads efforts to generate media coverage, and implements procedures for reviewing and responding to media requests for information. 
  • Builds and maintains positive relationships with regional agency communication directors, including county government, health department, fire and safety, and law enforcement to ensure effective, coordinated communications on critical issues.
  • Participates in the coordination of employee and division-wide events that showcase student and professional staff achievement.
  • Develops Communication Handbook including crisis information for Goshen Community Schools
  • Willing to work with students through high school Pathways and apprenticeships.
  • Performs other duties as assigned by Supervisor.

 

REQUIREMENTS:

  • Bachelor's degree in English, Communications, Journalism, Public Relations, or related field
  • Master's degree preferred.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Three to five years of progressively responsible experience in strategic communications, and public relations: previous experience in the public sector and/or public schools is preferred.
  • Knowledge of best communication practices and strategies to include print, video, news gathering, reporting, social media, web design, marketing, internal and external communications, community engagement, and crisis communications.
  • Strong writing and editing skills.
  • Knowledge of applicable federal and state laws, regulations, and directives such as the Family Educations Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA)
  • Member of Indiana School Public Relations Association (INDSPRA)
  • Ability to work under pressure with tight deadlines, including emergency and critical situations and the ability to calmly communicate with audiences, internal and external, during critical situations.

 HOURS:  52 weeks; 260 days per year; 40 hours per week.

 SALARY: Pay rate is negotiable based upon experience.
